Fright Night Friday Movie Review: Green Hornet

Hello everyone!

Hope you had a great Friday! Welcome to our second Fright Night Friday movie review! This week's review comes from my wonderful friend/cousin and co-owner of the Halloween Night group, Chas! Don't forget, if you have a movie review you would like to submit, please email it to me at: annah66842@yahoo.com ! With that being said, here is Chas's review! Enjoy!

Green Hornet (2011)

A percentage of people when asked “Do you know who The Green Hornet is?” The usual reply is “No, who is he?” When I talked to one of my friends about Kato, her reply was “What is a Kato?” Here is a brief explanation on the Green Hornet and Kato.

Green Hornet was really Britt Reid who was a newspaper salesman The vigilante nature of the hero's operations quickly resulted in the Green Hornet being declared an outlaw himself, and Britt Reid played to it. The Green Hornet became thought of as one of his city's biggest criminals, allowing him to walk into
suspected racketeers' offices and ply them for information, or even demand a cut of their profits. In doing so, the Green Hornet usually provoked them to attack him to remove this competitor, giving him license to defeat and leave them for the police without raising suspicion as to his true motives. Britt was also a relative of the Lone Ranger, as he was the Ranger's grand nephew.

He would be accompanied by his similarly masked chauffeur/bodyguard/enforcer, who was also Reid's valet, Kato, initially described as Japanese, and by 1939 as Filipino of Japanese descent. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, references to a Japanese heritage were dropped.

The Green Hornet appeared on radio, 1940‘s serial , in the 1960’s with
Van Williams as the Britt Reid / Green Hornet and Bruce Lee as Kato.

When the announcement was made they were going to be making a
Green Hornet movie, people like myself that grew up with the Green Hornet were eagerly waiting to see who would be cast in the roles. Many people speculated who might be playing Kato, but no word was mentioned as to who was playing the Green Hornet. Much to many peoples disbelief we found out that plump untalented Seth Rogen was co-writing and starring as Britt Reid / Green Hornet. Jay Chou plays Kato.

The movie was suppose to be an action comedy, but it fails miserably. Why? Two words… Seth Rogen. This plump untalented nothing took the character of Britt Reid and turned him into a mindless buffoon.

We see a plump Britt as a boy being sent home by his school for fighting. He was standing up for a kid being picked on. His dad breaks his favorite toy and basically tells him to get over it and he has to raise himself. As an adult Britt is an irresponsible playboy playing with the girls (like any female would want to
associate with Seth) and his dad gets mad over the fact he is wasting his life.

His dad dies, or rather is killed (It was quite obvious from the start who murdered Britt’s dad. That is how terrible this script is.) After the funeral Britt (not having a decent cup of coffee as he usually has in the morning) demands to speak to the person who makes the coffee. Kato use to work for Britt’s dad working on his cars and making him coffee. The two become friends and decide to go in disguise to the cemetery where they erected a large statue of James Reid and vandalize it. Britt sees a couple in trouble being bullied by thugs. He tries to stop them, but they decide to chase Britt. Our vigilante shows what he is made of when he decides to run away screaming like a little baby boy. Kato comes to his rescue. His character
comes across like a person who would pee his pants if a girl scout yelled at him for not paying her for the cookies he took. It doesn’t get any better. Britt decides that they were wasting their potential, so they should become crime fighters. Seth’s voice started to get on my nerves. He sounded like Shaggy from Scooby Doo hyped up on sugar.

Another scene shows the Green Hornet and Kato being chased by a truck. Kato picks up and rock and says “I will throw the rock through the windshield and you shoot him in the face with your gas gun.” Kato turns and sees the Green Hornet
running away shooting the gas gun over his shoulder screaming “EVERYMAN FOR HIMSELF!”

Enters Britt’s female companion. Lenore “Casey” Case. She was suppose to be Britt’s girlfriend, but I guess nobody told the obnoxious Seth this. Instead she was used by Britt as a sex object. Throughout the movie there was one sexual innuendo after another by Britt. She unknowingly becomes the mastermind to the Green Hornet, she uncovers information about the Russian crime boss Benjamin Chudnofsky that's instrumental in helping Kato and the Hornet. At the same time, she is constantly angered of being fought over for her affection by the feuding Britt and Kato which in the process temporally got her fired from her job before being hired back again. In the end she decides to help them.

The film is a total waste of time. It is a perfect example of what happens when an untalented nobody like Seth Rogen thinks he can co-write and star in a movie and make it entertaining. The action is way over the top. Too much action and very little to no story plot. I hated the movie.

Seth should crawl back to the type of mindless movies he is known for and leave action movies alone. I have two hopes. 1) Seth Rogen does NOT decide to make a
sequel. 2) One day soon someone will decide to make a Green Hornet movie. One that is worthy of the character. If I were to cast the role of Kato, I would choose Donnie Yen. For Britt Reid, I am not too sure, but anyone other than Seth would make the role come to life.

I give this movie a one skull
rating.
The only reason why I give it a one skull is due to the fact I did laugh a couple of times.

Thank you, Chas, for your great review! When I heard Seth Rogen was starring in the movie, I wondered how that was going to work since his genre is raunchy comedies!

Thank you everyone, for tuning in! Have a spooktacular weekend!

Pottermore

Well Folks,

The announcement has been made and it's official, we are getting a comprehensive Harry Potter website! As huge Harry Potter fans, we are most thrilled and excited! If you go to the Pottermore website now, you will find an email signup form, that way when the site opens in October, you can register to join! The site says that it will be free (let's hope it stays that way), but to check back on July 31st for a chance to win early registration to the website in order to help create the content! There is a video message from JK Rowling on the website detailing what all she hopes will come out of this project. What interests me is that she is going to let the fans basically create the content. I'm not sure how, maybe there will be forums on the website. She also stated that she will be revealing information about the Harry Potter world that she's never revealed before...that will be great! Available on the website will be audio books and ebooks, though I'm not sure if you will have to buy them or not.

All in all, I think this is going to be a fun website and I know we are all glad that the announcement wasn't a let down!!

Don't forget that the final Harry Potter movie will be in theaters on July 15th!

Fright Night Friday Movie Review: Scream 4

Welcome to our weekly Fright Night Friday movie review!! It's a perfect night here at Halloween Night for a scary movie...there are thunderstorms approaching! One little note: instead of using a 1-5 star rating system in our movie reviews, we have gone with a 1-5 skull rating system!

This weeks movie review is brought to us by my very good friend, TJ! He's a huge fan of horror movies and an aspiring writer! Here is his review for Scream 4!

Whoever said that sequels, especially those made more than ten years after the original, never live up to its predecessors, should eat their words with “Scream 4”.

The fourth film in the famous slasher horror series does exactly what the previous films did in making fun of different types of horror films. The original 1996 film made fun of scary movies in general, Scream 2 satired horror movie sequels and how they are rarely successfully, Scream 3 poked fun at trilogies, which as film buff Scream character Randy Meeks pointed out “Are rare in the horror field, but [they] do exist.” Scream 4 continues making fun of horror movies, but in a way that today's audiences can relate to. The fourth film makes fun of horror movie series, such as the Nightmare on Elm Street series, that tore away from the original films intentions and simply were made to make money. However, Scream 4 doesn't deserve that labeling unlike most horror movie series.

Scream 4 marks the return of Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley and the bitchy Gale Weathers-Riley, having moved on from the events of the previous films. Sidney has written a successful book about her experiences and is on a world-wide book tour, her last stop being in her hometown of Woodsboro, California. Dewey has been promoted to sheriff of Woodsboro and is married to Gale. Gale has written six books since Scream 3 which is what the “Stab” movies, the movies within the movie were based off of. However, Gale is bored with the silly small town of Woodsboro, and haven given up her job as the entertainment journalist she used to be, becomes fed up with her life. The day before Sidney arrives, things begin happening that remind fans of the series of what happened in the previous films.

As customary with horror movies, several chasing and killing scenes are shown on screen. Nothing too special about these is shown, except for the fact that viewers can almost feel the emotions of the ones being chased, especially Sidney. In addition, like the other films, the Ghostface killer sometimes calls his victims, however because of the Ghostface app. on phones that many Woodsboro residents have, it is difficult for the characters and indeed the audience to figure out if a prankster is calling or if it is actually Ghostface.

The showdown at the climax of the film kept my heart racing for the entire time that it happened. When the killers revealed themselves, I can honestly say that I was shocked and a bit surprised, because the characters who are the killers (the only hint I will give is that there are two killers) don't act like they would be capable of being the killers until they are unmasked, just as Billy Loomis and Stu Macher were in the original film. When Sidney defeats the mastermind killer, the one who didn't betray the other, I was blown away by how she did it. She grabs Dewey's gun, turns around to the approaching killer and shoots her in the chest uttering what I believe to be an awesome Sidney quote, “She forgot one rule about remakes, never fuck with the original.” Right then and there, I was literally almost jumping out of my seat in the theatre cheering for Sidney because long time fans of the series, such as myself, would expect Sidney to do something like that, but maybe not to that extent.

If the moviemakers decide to make another trilogy with Scream 4 being the start of it, I think the series will be a great success. All the filmmakers have to do is keep the Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven team and make sure that Sidney, Dewey, and Gale return and the series will do awesome. However, if they decide not to go ahead with another trilogy, Scream 4 did do a fantastic job of ending the series, so it could go either way. We will just have to wait and see.

I rate this movie:
Thank you, TJ, for your movie review! I've never seen the Scream movies, but you make them sound interesting...think I'll check them out sometime! Remember, if you have a movie you'd like to review for our blog, please send your review to: annah66842@yahoo.com and we'll be sure to feature it!

Have a hauntingly good weekend!

P.S.--A huge thank you to my awesome friend, Chas, for making our skull graphics!

Has anyone thought about how they will decorate for Halloween this year? I love collecting new Halloween decorations and will soon be the proud owner of an original, handmade Halloween doll! A very good friend of mine who lives in Chicago has been creating these handmade dolls throughout the year, so I asked her if she would make one with a Halloween theme! It turned out perfectly...it is so cute!! I can't wait to get it! I will be sure to post pictures of it!

We are still planning on throwing our
Harry Potter party for the final movie that comes out in July. So far, I haven't had much interest from local friends, too bad I can't get all of our internet friends together! We will probably just have a small affair with my very good friend and her family...it'll be fun!! I have all the ideas I need for the party, now I just need to bring them to life!
